Choosing The Best Lens For You

What Lenses Are For You

There are a number of choices in intraocular lenses available today. In order to determine which option is best for you, Dr. Kasten and his team will perform a thorough evaluation including extensive testing to ascertain the overall health of the eye as well as interviewing each patient to determine their wants, needs, lifestyle, etc. Since not every lens is appropriate for every patient, we take a lot of time with each patient in order to choose the best option.

Crystalens

The Crystalens is what is known as an accommodative lens. This means that the lens position changes with the normal muscular contractions in the eye thereby allowing distance, computer, and reading vision, most if not all of the time.

SYMFONY MULTIFOCAL AND THE TECNIS MULTIFOCAL

The TECNIS® extended range of vision IOL delivers a continuous, full range of high quality vision with incidence of halos and glare comparable to a monofocal IOL. The TECNIS® is available in both a Non-Toric version and a Toric version for patients with astigmatism. With the newer generation of Tecnis lenses, distance, computer and reading can many times be achieved with a much lower incidence of side effects than the older version. The Symfony IOL is the newest version of the Tecnis line of multifocals. It offers a superior range of focus as well as fewer side effects.

RESTOR MULTIFOCAL

The ReStor multifocal is a diffractive lens. This means that the light rays are split between distance and near. With the newer generation of the ReStor lens, distance, computer and reading can many times be achieved with a much lower incidence of side effects than the older version.

TORIC LENSES

The Toric lens is used to correct astigmatism. It does not correct for both distance and near but allows good distance much time without glasses. You will, however, still require reading glasses.

ACRYSOF PANOPTIX® IMPLANTABLE LENS

What is PanOptix?

The first Trifocal Intraocular Lens (IOL), the Acrysof PanOptix®, was approved for use in the United States in 2019. It has been implanted since 2015 in Europe and has been generating excellent reviews and stellar patient satisfaction.

The PanOptix IOL is different from the current lenses available in the United States in that it offers three focal lengths – distance, computer, and reading vision.

Multifocal intraocular lenses that became popular over ten years ago limited patients to distance and reading vision, with poor mid-range capabilities. As a result, eyeglasses were often necessary for computer use. These older multifocal lenses also had a significant incidence of glare, halos, and starbursts, which limited patient satisfaction.

The new PanOptix Trifocal Lens improves these limitations by providing good computer vision and decreasing glare, halos, and starbursts. This lens also gives patients the ability to perform most tasks without glasses, although wearing glasses may enhance vision even more and is an option after cataract surgery. There is also a toric version of this lens that can decrease astigmatism for certain patients.

The AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal IOL is a type of multifocal IOL used to focus images clearly onto the back of your eye (retina) to allow clear vision after the cataract removal. In addition, the center of the AcrySof® IQ PanOptix® Trifocal IOL allows for better near (reading) vision and intermediate (computer work) vision versus what a monofocal lens would provide.

PanOptix IOL utilizes advanced ENLIGHTEN® Optical Technology, a proprietary design that optimizes intermediate vision without compromising exceptional near and distance vision. The ENLIGHTEN technology allows people to see better in both bright and dim conditions – both day and night – by providing a meaningful high total light utilization.

Healthgrades

I had a great experience, staff was friendly, courteous and all was very prompt. A lot of places make you wait no matter what time you’re scheduled for and here they were true to appointment time. Doctor Oppenheimer was really great at explaining everything going on, I saw her back in 2014 and this is what brought me back to South Palm Eye Associates. Thank you for the great experience!
